On 10.02.2025 <\/strong>from 16:15<\/strong> the Center for Criminological Research Saxony<\/em> invites you to a colloquium.<\/p>\n\n

Prof. Dr. Thomas Hestermann<\/a> from the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences will give a lecture on the topic:<\/p>\n\n

Knives, murders and migrants: Clich\u00e9s and patterns of interpretation in the reporting of violence in the leading German media<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Scientists, practitioners and anyone interested in the topic are invited. The colloquium will take place on the premises of the ZKFS in Chemnitz and simultaneously online via Zoom. <\/p>\n\n

Abstract<\/strong>: German television news, TV tabloid magazines and national newspapers present a distorted picture of violent crime. Under pressure from right-wing populists and so-called concerned citizens, editorial offices are increasingly mentioning the nationality of suspects – but usually only if they do not have a German passport. This selection pattern is particularly pronounced in knife attacks. This has been proven by our long-term analysis since 2007. Anyone who counters irrational fears with statistical findings faces the accusation of being out of touch with life, as an exemplary commentary analysis shows. <\/p>\n\n

Dr. Thomas Hestermann<\/strong> teaches journalism at the Hamburg campus of Macromedia University. He learned journalism from the ground up. As a reporter, he went down into the Gorleben mine shaft, was on the road with violent skinheads and conducted interviews on the summit of Mont Blanc. He was a presenter at Norddeutscher Rundfunk and was head of the editorial team for the TV series “Tacheles – Talk am roten Tisch” (Phoenix) for ten years. <\/p>\n\n
