Abstract: German television news, TV tabloid magazines and national newspapers present a distorted picture of violent crime. Under pressure from right-wing populists and so-called concerned citizens, editorial offices are increasingly mentioning the nationality of suspects – but usually only if they do not have a German passport. This selection pattern is particularly pronounced in knife attacks. This has been proven by our long-term analysis since 2007. Anyone who counters irrational fears with statistical findings faces the accusation of being out of touch with life, as an exemplary commentary analysis shows.
Dr. Thomas Hestermann teaches journalism at the Hamburg campus of Macromedia University. He learned journalism from the ground up. As a reporter, he went down into the Gorleben mine shaft, was on the road with violent skinheads and conducted interviews on the summit of Mont Blanc. He was a presenter at Norddeutscher Rundfunk and was head of the editorial team for the TV series “Tacheles – Talk am roten Tisch” (Phoenix) for ten years.
